Where to stay in the Grampians

Halls Gap is the town at the heart of the national park and the best place to stay if you want to be within close proximity to all of the walks, waterfalls, lookouts and cafes. It also has the best Grampians accommodation, with a variety of options.

Dunkeld is the small town at the southern end of the park and is a quieter alternative to Halls Gap. There are some great walks within easy reach of the town too.

If you prefer to be in a bustling area with plenty of comforts, then you have a few options of larger regional towns where you can stay. Ararat and Stawell are both east of Halls Gap, with Ararat being slightly bigger. Horsham is to the north of the Grampians National Park and Hamilton is a large town to the south, with Horsham being the largest of them all.

Camping in the Grampians National Park 

There are 12 public campgrounds inside the national park operated by Parks Victoria. Three of these are free to stay and operate on a first-in best-dressed basis. The rest must be booked and paid for in advance on their website here.

Plantation Campground is the largest and most popular place to camp in the Grampians. It’s free to stay and has plenty of space for all sorts of camping setups from tents to large buses and caravans. It’s 10km away from Halls Gap on the dirt Mt Zero Road. It has toilets, bush showers, fire pits and rainwater tanks.

If you’d rather base yourself in one of the larger regional towns within reach of the Grampians, Stawell, Ararat, Horsham and Hamilton all have plenty of accommodation options with motor inns and motels a common choice.
